This Portrait photographer shines a light on election posters

The local TV station in Brussels wondered about all these different election posters in brussels.

With the European, national and communal elections coming up all political parties invested into portrait photography. the posters that are being distributed as we speak are hanging all around town.

Portrait photographer Sander de Wilde was asked to comment on the different styles and views on portrait photography.

The posters of Vooruit and Groen were very interesting, but other parties, sometimes with smaller budgets went for group shots or even available lighting and selfies.

My dentist had this great booking system. You just look up when he has some time for you. You book the time slot et voilá!

You even get a reminder a week for the consult, and an sms the day before. I thought wow! That's so easy, I want to have that too. Easy for customers, and easy for me as a photographer.

A while I worked with the Facebook scheduler, but not everyone uses Facebook, so now I found another not too expensive app.

You decide if you want a photography session of 30/45/60 minutes, find open dates and time slots, click click and it's done.

And yes, I will send a reminder, because a no show is bad for me. Not only for my business (I prepare every shoot, checking lights, background, arranging my home studio) but also mentally. I prepare mentally to every shoot. Portraits take mental energy, but a no show takes even more mental energy.

So after 2 e-mail reminders, we meet at the reserved date and time, and together we work for great results.

Als fotograaf weet je nooit of, waar en hoe je werk gepubliceerd wordt.

Hier werd een foto van mij valselijk van mijn website gestolen, en gebruikt in een extreem-rechtse Poolse Facebook-post over de Pride-parade in Polen. Gelukkig hebben mensen van Demagog het beeld als Fake betiteld en door FB laten blurren.

De titel luidt: 'Dit is een foto van de Gelijkheidsparade in Warschau?

Op the website van DEMAGOG klinkt het zo:

Dit is een foto uit 2013 uit Brussel. NEPNIEUWS IN EEN NOTENDOP

Een Facebook -bericht suggereert dat op de foto twee mensen in jurken te zien zijn die op een openbare plaats urineren tijdens de Equality Parade in Warschau. De auteur van de foto nam hem zelfs tijdens de Brusselse Gelijkheidsparade in 2013. Op sociale media is een foto verschenen waarop twee mensen in jurken te zien zijn die op een openbare plaats tegen een bouwkolom staan te urineren. De beschrijving van de post - "U dupiarza na paradzie", verwijst naar de controversiële verklaring van de president van Warschau, Rafał Trzaskowski, wat suggereert dat het incident plaatsvond in Warschau tijdens de Equality Parade op 25 juni 2022. De foto is niet gemaakt in Polen, maar in België, en werd bijna 10 jaar geleden gepubliceerd . Op deze manier werd het uit de context gehaald en raakte het de emoties van Poolse internetgebruikers.

Het beeld wordt nu geblurred door Facebook als zijnde fake news, maar het staat er nog wel.

Het bericht werd gedeeld door meer dan 100 gebruikers. Sommige opmerkingen geven aan dat de ontvangers het vanzelfsprekend vonden dat de foto in Polen was genomen (hoewel er een gebruiker was die België aangaf). De intocht wekte veel negatieve emoties op: "Als dieren, zonder remmingen", "Parade van vaseline", "Het zal stinken en hoe je hier het stadhuis binnenkomt". De foto's zijn niet in Polen gemaakt - het kan snel worden gecontroleerd De post , door te verwijzen ("u dupiarza") naar de controversiële verklaring van de president van Warschau, Rafał Trzaskowski in de podcast Wojewódzki & Kędzierski , suggereerde dat de foto werd genomen tijdens de Equality Parade in Warschau. In veel gevallen duurt het enkele tientallen seconden om te controleren of de beschrijving van de foto de omstandigheden van het maken weerspiegelt. Het is voldoende om een afbeeldingszoekmachine te gebruiken, bijvoorbeeld Google.

De foto die we bespraken werd in 2013 op Getty Images geplaatst met het onderschrift : "België, Brussel, 19 mei 2013. Twee homo's verkleed als vrouwen pisten op een muur tijdens een parade nabij het Centraal Station."

Onder welke omstandigheden is de foto gemaakt? De auteur beschreef ze zelf De foto op Getty Images is gesigneerd met de naam van fotograaf Sander de Wilde (op de foto die op Facebook is gepost zien we het einde van zijn websiteadres: "...wilde.com"). Het staat in de galerij die op de website is gepubliceerd, waar we meer foto's kunnen zien van de parade, die plaatsvond in mei 2013 in Brussel . Op zijn blog beschreef de auteur de omstandigheden van de foto: “Van alle foto's die naar alle Belgische kranten werden gestuurd, koos er slechts één (De Standaard) voor mijn foto. Het was een foto van twee mannen vermomd als vrouwen die ik in het geheim had gevolgd toen ik ze wanhopig rond de Kunstberg in het centrum van Brussel zag rennen. Ze vonden een min of meer besloten plek in de gang bij het centraal station (waar urinegeur heel normaal is) om staand te urineren. Ik had deze foto bijna niet opgestuurd, ik vond het een beetje kitscherig, maar ik dacht ik; stel hem toch voor als mijn vrouw hem mooi vond."

In tegenstelling tot wat in de inhoud van de besproken post werd gesuggereerd , is de foto niet gemaakt tijdens de Equality Parade in Warschau. Het is bijna 10 jaar oud en uit zijn verband gerukt: het stelt een gebeurtenis in Brussel voor. De fotografie die in de Poolse context werd gebruikt, riep negatieve emoties op bij de ontvangers - wat ook een kenmerkende en vaak opzettelijke daad van desinformatie is.

Photographer in Lockdown

Yes, I panicked. How to stay alive during Covid as a small entrepeneur/photographer.I started photographing families in Brussels. Just as a mental support to them, and to maybe earn a little cash. Most important: this was a great way to get on the road, see people, although from a distance. I just needed to go out, and as a journalist, with a presscard, I could!

My creative initiatives were picked up by some media beginning of the year. During the first Covid-19 lockdown in Belgium they interviewed me on my workshops, photography projects and more.

Portretten in quarantaine

Ook voor fotograaf Sander de Wilde was het even slikken toen de overheid de nieuwe maatregelen aankondigde. "Het is vreselijk om nu fotograaf te zijn. Ik ben fotojournalist en doe portretten en reportages, maar dat is allemaal opgehouden. Ik geef ook les, maar dat is nu gestopt en opeens zit je thuis."

Hoewel de overheid het een en ander aan sociale maatregelen had die hem er financieel doorheen moeten helpen, wilde De Wilde het werk niet helemaal neerleggen. Online kwam hij al gauw met een op maat gemaakte fotocursus die mensen thuis kunnen doen. 'Creatief binnenshuis' voor beginnende fotografen leert de mensen in 120 minuten een aantal basics.

Normaal maakt de fotograaf naast zijn werk als fotojournalist ook portretten van Brusselaars. Dat werkt gaat door, besliste hij. Maar dat gebeurt coronaproof: hij neemt portretten van families terwijl ze op hun balkon staan, of door het raam. Een echt quarantaineportret dus.

So if you would like outdoor portraits, studio portraits, or even portraits at your office? During the pandemic I can still shoot portraits for B to B assignments, and only if it's really important. We're both risking to get infected. But with a good preparation a portrait can be done safely., from a distance, so maybe this is a good time to schedule a shoot...

shooting a Commissioner in B&W

For the Finnish Journal of Foreign Affairs I was assigned to photograph EU Commissioner mrs. Margrethe Vestager. It made me really happy because it was the 3rd time I could meet her, and she's just really very sympathetic. She also is one of the rare Commissioners that decorated her room in a cosy way. This must be the Danish taste for design, but her working room is full of art, great furniture, and a lot of photography books. A really nice place to be, stuffed with nice things, but still very bright, and tidy. If she wasn't a commissioner, I would ask her to do the interior design of my house. spread in the magazine with Margrethe Vestager posing for a portrait. Now my Finnish isn't fluently, but from the interview I discovered that mrs. Vestager has about exactly the same age I do, (5 days younger) which makes me feel even closer to her. -though I only met her these few times, and only for an hour or so, where I am the one photographing, and the journalist does the talking- However, I was very pleased to find out, when mrs. Anna-Kaisa Hiltunen, the journalist of the Finnish Journal of Foreign Affairs, with whom I had a great talk and a latte just before the interview, sent me the pdf of the magazine, that they choose for the Black and White portraits I sent.

Demotix vanished, Corbis sold.

As a photographer I used to be happy to work for Corbis. Bill Gates' own personal agency (he loves photography) now is sold to the Chinese, and the footage will be available through Getty. Demotix, the website for freelance reports, sold to Corbis just a few years ago, now is totally vanished from the web. Where did these images go? Why was it taken off line? Belgian newspaper De Morgen interviewed me on my opinion on these changes. I told them the online photo world is a dead end, and that coöperative agencies like Belgian IDphotoagency are the future. Photographers take their own distribution back in hand. At that time I didn't know Demotix vanished. My images on Molenbeek were published all around, but I never got payed for this. In the article the newspaper worries about censorship by the Chinese. My worries are on communication and sales. Minder werk voor fotografenOok niet alle fotografen blijken wakker te liggen van de nieuwe eigenaar. Sander De Wilde, een Nederlandse fotograaf die sinds 2008 vanuit Brussel werkt, verdeelt zijn foto's ook via Corbis. "Maar zo'n agentschap is eigenlijk een extraatje. De meeste inkomsten komen van een opdrachtgever, en van Corbis krijg ik maar heel af en toe een vraag. Ik laad er wel foto's op waarvan ik denk dat ze relevant kunnen zijn voor andere media. Als ik dan iets verkoop, krijg ik 35 procent van de prijs. Voor een foto die online gepubliceerd wordt, krijg ik dan misschien een paar dollar. Bij een agentschap zoals Imagedesk (dat opgericht is door enkele Belgische fotografen) is dat heel anders: daar krijg je als fotograaf 90 procent van de verkoopprijs."Hoewel het de facto samengaan van Corbis en Getty op het eerste gezicht een slechte zaak lijkt voor de fotografen - een agentschap minder kan voor minder werk en een druk op de prijzen zorgen - is De Wilde toch optimistisch. "Niet elke redactie gebruikt Corbis, waardoor er niet zoveel beelden gekocht worden. Getty wordt meer gebruikt, wat dus voor extra verkoop kan zorgen. Bovendien was de communicatie met Corbis de laatste tijd niet zo goed. Ik hoop dus op een leuk contact met de nieuwe eigenaar."

Did it again. One whole day of shooting portraits on location. At the client's location we built a studio with light on the background making this intimate cirkel effect. The light on the portrayed persons was quite flattering, so I could focus on posing and expressions. From every person I made about 15-20 shots, and we chose the best one together with the portrayed person. This way the coworkers feel valued, and they always feel better after the shoot, having seen that a professional photographer can make you even look better then imagined by yourself!

Brussels Terror alert weekend

This was a crazy week. For the entire (Western) world but also for me as a photographer. I was asked to go to Molenbeek about 10 times this week. Nothing to photograph there but innocent, scary, angry or annoyed citizens. Photographing 'nothing' but buildings where terrorists lived, drank their tea, or where there parents live. And photographing other journalist at work.. Not much of a challenge for a photographer who wants to shoot something special, or change this world for the better... And photographing in times can even mean risking your life?...So.... No, the weekend wasn't much better. Photographing in a 'locked out' Brussels wasn't much else then a normal weekend. Because most of the Brussels' Sundays are very quiet. Most diplomats don't visit the city and stay at home or in their foreign hometown every weekend. In fact Brussels is just very busy during the work week, when hundred of thousands international andFlemish workers come to the capital and work. Most weekends are quiet though not for shopping zones and night life. This weekend was a little different... Military and police squads everywhere. It's a strange contrast with the medieval city center, or a couple getting married last Saturday. Even (Boy Pee) Manneken Pis was being protected! And in fact it was one of the few places where more then 15 people gathered at the same time this weekend. The picture of the marrying couple ended up being the most used by media, and that is a good thing. It has something positive, the bride looking up in the air. The most used picture is this one where she looks up. Another picture I sold was made five years ago, when part of Brussels was called a no-go zone. In fact I had just arrived living in Brussels and I didn't know much about this neighborhood and I was glad with the assignment. It's a piece in De Standaard on the youth in these difficult neighborhoods, and the image illustrates the atmosphere a little dramatized. Though it's not a positive image, this picture makes people read the article, and that's exactly what strong photography should do.. Real 'positive' news could be mentioned as the fact that many people became nicer since the Paris Attacks. People greet each other, open doors, smile more, have eye contact more often. Though a lot of people feel depressed, another sentiment can be felt too. That of endurance, optimism, relativism. I hope it works.
